NAB app, internet banking and phone lines down in nationwide outage; ATMs still working

National Australia Bank customers were locked out of internet banking and the NAB app on Wednesday afternoon, with the bank confirming the outage had also cut off its phone services.

In an update to customers, NAB said the issue was affecting a number of its digital channels, including the NAB app and internet banking. "The issue is also affecting our phone services, and customers may be unable to contact us by phone at this time," the bank said.

NAB said its ATMs remained available.

The bank has not said what caused the outage, how many customers are affected or when services are expected to return. It has also not said whether card payments or EFTPOS transactions have been disrupted.

"Our teams are investigating and working to fix this as quickly as possible," NAB said. "We're sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience while we work to restore services."

The ABC first reported the outage on Wednesday afternoon. An earlier announcement on NAB's website said no planned maintenance was scheduled.

NAB directed customers to its online service status page for updates. When Mencari News Australia checked the page on Wednesday afternoon, it said there were no major service disruptions reported for NAB's digital channels, payments or merchant terminals.

User reports climbed quickly as the outage spread. Independent tracker Entireweb Status recorded 55 outage reports in the past hour, 55 of them from Australia. The figures are submitted by users and do not show how many customers are affected in total.

Previous disruptions

It is not the first time NAB's digital banking has failed. In July 2024, Down Detector showed a spike of nearly 1,400 outage reports at 1:30pm during a failure that left thousands of customers unable to use internet banking. That issue was fixed overnight, and NAB said its banking services were back online and running normally.

NAB said it would share updates on Wednesday's outage as they became available.
