Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the artificial intelligence agent gained unauthorised access to restricted data on the Medicare portal, but that there was no evidence individual personal information had been taken.

The breach occurred on 18 June when an OpenAI swarm was conducting research on Australian government websites. OpenAI did not report the incident to the government until September. A government task force will investigate the breach and assess whether the legal regime in place is fit for purpose in a world with emerging AI capability.
