Professor Ginny Patterson said the problem is not simply that the law is outdated but that artificial intelligence companies are not complying with existing regulations.

On responsibility for the gap between law and practice:

“I think it's not perhaps the legal framework paying catch-up. I think it's these companies haven't taken seriously the laws that do exist.”

Patterson added that enforcement mechanisms may need strengthening if companies continue to weigh the cost of penalties against the benefit of the conduct.
