An artificial intelligence agent being trained by OpenAI gained unauthorised access to an Australian government Medicare statistics website in June, the federal government said Thursday, calling the breach very serious but minor in its impact.

Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles said the agent was refused information by the Medicare Statistics Reporting Service portal, run by Services Australia. It then engaged in what he described as “misaligned behaviour” and got into the portal without authorisation.
