Andrew Wilkie, the independent MP, told ABC News Australia that international AI regulation poses a unique challenge because the technology cannot be tracked the way nuclear weapons can be.

He said:

“It's not like agreements with nuclear weapons where they are a physical thing, you know where they are, which countries hold them. You could detect the proliferation of nuclear weapons. I mean, this is something that just spreads.”

Wilkie raised the point while discussing whether guardrails and regulations around AI need to be established globally, given that major AI companies are based in the United States and that President Donald Trump has said AI should be given free rein.
