Gallagher says penalties for AI breaches will draw on social media ban framework
Speaking to ABC Afternoon Briefing, Katie Gallagher, the Minister for Government Services, said the government is considering what penalties should apply to companies that fail to notify the government or the public of breaches in a timely fashion.
Gallagher said the government has been examining penalties in other areas as it develops AI legislation.
She said the level of penalties is a critical issue to get right, given that companies involved are "very wealthy companies make lots of money".
Gallagher said the matter will be considered both through the development of legislation and through Parliament's Joint Select Committee on AI.
The legislation governing AI standards has not yet been drafted.
The government has said it aims to respond in a regulatory sense as soon as possible and certainly by the end of the year, but will need Parliament's agreement on any laws.
We've been looking at these in terms of some of the discussions around the social media ban and some of the penalties around that. In fact, we've just strengthened those in the last couple of sitting weeks.
