Speaking to ABC Afternoon Briefing, Katie Gallagher said the Australian Signals Directorate is taking the lead on the government's response to the OpenAI breach, rather than the newly established AI Safety Institute.

Gallagher told the ABC that multiple government bodies have responsibilities in AI oversight and regulation. "We've got a whole range of bodies that have responsibilities here," she said, adding that the AI Safety Institute "has a very important role" but is not alone in the response.

She said the rapid review triggered by the breach would examine what powers all the relevant bodies need to protect Australia's systems and data from AI-related incidents.

Gallagher added that the government would take advice from all these bodies on how to improve their powers going forward.
