Gallagher said the institute has an important role but is not the only body with responsibilities in the AI regulation space. The Australian Signals Directorate is leading the government's response to the OpenAI breach specifically, she said.

Asked about calls from the ACTU to give the institute regulatory powers, Gallagher said the government needs to make sure all funded bodies have the right powers to do their job. She said the rapid review of the breach would examine what powers are needed.

"We need to make sure that all of our bodies that are funded and who provide support in this area have the right powers to do the job they need to do," she said.
