Gallagher says legislation must include guardrails on AI reporting requirements
The OpenAI breach will force the government to legislate new requirements around how artificial intelligence companies operate in Australia, Katie Gallagher, the Minister for Government Services, said in an interview with ABC News Australia.
Gallagher said the incident showed the need for mandatory safeguards on frontier AI models, particularly around how companies report breaches.
The Joint Select Committee on artificial intelligence will examine the incident and the proposed standards alongside a rapid government review, Gallagher said. Both processes will inform legislation aimed at being tabled by the end of the year, though parliament's agreement would be needed to meet that timeline.
A discussion paper on potential AI standards has already been released, Gallagher indicated, with reporting requirements among the issues under consideration.
We're going to have to put some guardrails and requirements around these... and also reporting it and under what arrangements they report it and how and I think all of that will be looked at by both the review but also by this Joint Select Committee which you know has representatives from across the Parliament because you know We actually need the Parliament to pass those laws, so we need to get support across the board.
