Government shelved AI safety act under industry pressure, senator says

Independent Senator David Pocock, speaking to ABC News Australia on the Joint Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence, questioned the government's decision to shelve a planned AI safety act.
The government has been considering whether to refer the recent breach of Australian government websites to the AFP.
Probably not given a questions about why the government back in 2024 announced that they were going to develop and legislate an AI safety act, and then it seems under pressure from industry just shelved that plan. It looks pretty silly now, given what we're seeing with AI.
