Pocock calls for stronger AI regulation before welcoming frontier companies

By The Financial Register

Independent Senator David Pocock said Australia should welcome frontier AI companies but only under conditions that include proper regulation and guarantees of long-term economic benefit, speaking to ABC News Australia.

Pocock said Australia's current laws do not provide adequate safeguards. He pointed to the recent breach of an Australian government website by an AI agent, noting that similar conduct by an Australian citizen could result in criminal charges.

He said Australia should work more closely with middle powers including Canada, the UK and the European Union on AI regulation, rather than rely solely on leverage with the United States.

If we are going to have these companies come and set up shop here, then let's actually ensure that one, we have the regulations in place. And two, we can actually guarantee to people that there will be a long term benefit because leverage, but like, when have you seen the government use the leverage we have on gas or the U.
